A long, long time ago in a
land of enchanted forests and… oops, wrong story. A lot of people ask
"How did a couple of kids in their early 20’s start a company like
Backstage Audio?” Well, the story the best that I can remember is that
back in 1996, a couple of boyz, Josh Bowman and Matthew Bonham wanted
to host a church dance. We saw it as a way to bring more youth in.
After a lot of red tape and begging, we were finally approved but were
still left with a dilemma—what did we know about DJ-ing? If you didn’t
guess, we knew nothing. Nada. Zip. So we took the church sound system,
a couple of cd player boom boxes, and a cheap mixer from Radio Shack
(funny how everyone gets there start from Radio Shack?!). So a few
blown breakers, unedited songs (oops), and countless Mt Dews® later,
were rolling—we’re shaking the church. No one really remembers how
well it went but it evidentially wasn’t bad enough for us to give it
up. We were actually asked to make a return appearance. Since then,
Josh has worked numerous fast food joints, radio stations, and
department stores to earn money to invest into Charleston’s “best kept
secret.” Matt has worked at record stores, retail, and an energy drink
company to do the same. Over time, we have invested thousands into
what we proudly call Backstage Audio. We have never had any formal
training which may explain our unique way of running our show. The
name? We dunno. A friend of ours suggested “Two White Boyz with a
Record.” Needless to say, it just didn’t catch and, well, it was
flippin’ dumb. I didn’t say it wasn’t funny as heck, I just said it
was dumb. So it eventually ended up being Backstage Audio. It just
sounded cool when we had to have a name to make I.D. tags (yeah, we
were cool). Those two words are now a household name in the area. Ok,
ALMOST a household name. Over the years, we have since gone from
church speakers, mediocre equipment, and a police beacon to a massive
display of lighting and sound capable of producing shows for 1,000
comfortably. We are a company founded on fun and affordable
entertainment. We are different. We invite you to see what has taken
years to produce and observe our passion for entertaining by letting
us entertain you for any party, dance, or event that you may have.
